Just when I got into my car and started the engine, a new message flashed on my cell phone screen.

“Do you know what’s the worst part of being away from you now?” Said the first message from Angelo.

“I’m wide awake and thinking of you…” Said the second one.

I looked at my watch and smiled. It was around five in the morning in Rome now.

“Turns out missing you is a pain…” Said the third one.

It was mutual, to be honest. And no matter how many times I tried to deny it and pretend it was nothing, I really wanted to be with Angelo now.

“Is there anything I could do to lessen your pain?” I typed in response to his last message.

“It would be much easier to lessen it if you were here now…”

He didn’t need to say more. I knew exactly what he meant by that, and I couldn’t but admit that I liked the perspective of meeting a new day with him, in the same bed.

I felt my pulse accelerate; my heart raced in my chest. Who would have thought it would be so easy to excite me? But Angelo obviously knew how to unlock the door that had been locked for years.

It was new to me – to feel things like that for a man I knew so little about. But the deeper I let them in, the better I knew what I wanted.

And I wanted him… In every meaning of the word.

“Maybe next time we meet, I’ll find a way to make you feel better…”

“Counting seconds until I see you again, Isabella.”

Aw, he knew just what to say to melt my stupid heart that somehow knew no other joy but to beat for him.

Since when? I asked myself. “Since the dance you shared with him,” my inner voice said.

Another message followed, but it wasn’t from Angelo.

“I haven’t heard from you for almost twelve hours!”

Mom.

I dialed her number and waited for her to pick up the phone, which was right after the first beep.

“My dear daughter, I can’t believe you’ve blessed me with a call.”

“Hi, mom. And it’s not like I never call you. I called you last night remember?”

“It was to wish me sweet dreams. We didn’t even talk.”

“Sorry, I was too tired for anything but a few words.” I switched the call to speakerphone and drove out of the underground parking.

“When am I going to see you?” Mom asked. “I see your cat more than I see you, Isabella!”

“Wanna go on a book tour with me? This way, you would be able to see me every day, for the next three weeks or so.”

“Thanks, but the answer is no. You know I can’t miss my appointments with the massage therapist.” Mom was suffering from pain in her back and visits to the massage therapist had become an essential part of her life.

“I’ll stop by later today,” I said. “I have presents for you.” I brought them from Rome, and I knew mom would be happy to get them.
